The varieties of cabling used for networks has multiplied over time, copper and optical fiber are the 2 basic kinds of cabling. Fiber is used mainly for spine deployments, and copper is generally used for structured cabling.

Copper breaks down into multiple classes, and the classes are numbered and are known as Cat, which gives us Cat 1, through to Cat 7 now. Before Cat 5 everything was based mostly on telephone wiring. Cat 3 was telephone grade cabling and was an inexpensive and ample manner of driving a 10 mbps network whereas sustaining a constant Cat three infrastructure for both voice and data. Cat 4 was higher quality than Cat three, however was quick lived because it didn’t actually do anything aside from ship 10 mbps a bit cleaner and very little value distinction for the cabling.
